ERP vs MES vs SCADA: responsibilities and data flow

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) usually coordinates commercial and planning records; a manufacturing execution system (MES) coordinates production execution and genealogy; supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) supervises industrial processes and equipment data. Approved SCADA or historian data can provide equipment events to the MES or analytics layer. The MES returns validated completion and consumption to ERP. Exceptions are reconciled; no layer silently overwrites another's master data.
