Manufacturing technology glossary

Use these definitions as a starting point, then document the meaning used in your organization. Product vendors may use the same label for different boundaries.

ERP — Enterprise resource planning

A business system commonly used for orders, purchasing, inventory, finance, planning, and costing. ERP responsibilities vary by product and configuration.

MES — Manufacturing execution system

A system that coordinates production execution, such as dispatch, operations, consumption, output, genealogy, and in-process quality. Boundaries vary.

SCADA — Supervisory control and data acquisition

Software used to supervise industrial processes, present current conditions, manage alarms, and collect process data. It may interact with control systems and requires appropriate specialist governance.

OEE — Overall equipment effectiveness

A compound measure using availability, performance, and quality. Its meaning depends on approved time, speed, and count definitions.

CMMS — Computerized maintenance management system

A system for assets, maintenance requests, work orders, preventive schedules, labor, parts, and failure history.

RPO — Recovery point objective

The approved point in time to which data must be recovered after disruption; it expresses tolerable data loss, not backup frequency alone.

RTO — Recovery time objective

The approved target time for restoring a business service after disruption. It needs a defined start, end, scope, and owner.

Edge computing

Computing placed near equipment or a site so selected processing can happen with lower latency, less data transfer, or greater local autonomy.

API — Application programming interface

A defined way for software to exchange requests and data. An available API does not by itself settle security, ownership, retries, or reconciliation.

Master data

Relatively stable shared definitions such as items, assets, suppliers, locations, units, and reason codes. Each important field needs a source and owner.

Data lineage

A record of where data originated, how it changed, and which outputs use it. Lineage supports interpretation and issue investigation.

Idempotency

A property that lets a repeated integration request produce the intended result without accidentally creating duplicate transactions.

Landing zone

A prepared cloud foundation covering account structure, identity, network, policy, logging, cost, and operational responsibilities.

Workflow exception

A case the standard automated path cannot or should not complete. It needs a visible queue, reason, owner, action, and audit history.

Digital twin

A digital representation connected to a physical asset, process, or system for a defined purpose. The term alone does not specify fidelity, update rate, or decision authority.
